CVCA Celebrates 50 Years with New Website, Compelling Historical Timeline, and Nationwide Events July 8, 2024 By jjackson@cvca.ca Home About Announcement Home Toronto, ON – July 8, 2024 – The Canadian Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) proudly marks its 50th anniversary today, celebrating five decades of commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth in Canada. In preparation for this significant anniversary, CVCA collaborated on an ambitious research project to document and present the rich history of our association and the broader industry we represent. The result is a comprehensive narrative that chronicles the journey, captures pivotal moments, and honours the leaders who have shaped the organization and industry’s path. CVCA’s new and refreshed website now features a 50-year timeline that vividly brings to life the milestones and achievements that have defined CVCA’s history. “Today, we celebrate not just an organization, but a community that has grown stronger over the past 50 years,” said Kim Furlong, Chief Executive Officer, CVCA. “We owe our success to the dedication and hard work of our members, past and present leaders, and the staff serving our industry. Their unwavering commitment has transformed CVCA into the influential voice of Canada’s venture capital and private equity industry. I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been part of this journey and look forward to pursuing our mission to help our members fuel the economy of the future by empowering today’s businesses.” In 1974, CVCA’s inaugural president Gerald Sutton set the stage for an association dedicated to addressing counterproductive tax policies and an unfavourable regulatory environment that could hinder the growth of Canada’s VC and PE sectors. This original mission has remained central to CVCA’s purpose and continues to guide advocacy efforts today. CVCA’s current efforts include addressing the proposed increase in the capital gains inclusion rate, a measure that can and will significantly impact investment, job creation and innovation in Canada. “Our members are at the heart of everything the CVCA does,” said Jeannette Wiltse, Chair of CVCA’s Board and Partner & Chief Financial Officer at Relay Ventures. “Their efforts are behind the creation of thousands of jobs, the advancement of innovative technologies, and the strengthening of local economies across the country. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we honour the directors, past chairs, and CEOs who have built this organization and continue to drive it forward. The CVCA has done an outstanding job, and with the support of our vibrant community, we are excited to tackle the challenges and opportunities ahead.” As part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations, CVCA will embark on a nationwide tour this fall, connecting members and celebrating the industry’s collective achievements. These events will be more than just social gatherings; they are a testament to the vibrant community that has grown around a shared mission. From coast to coast, members and industry stakeholders will reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and envision the future. This year has been marked by incredible achievements from CVCA members, highlighted through the CVCA’s awards programs. Since its formal inception in 2005, the CVCA Awards have recognized excellence in the industry. This year, CVCA brought back in-person awards presentations at the Invest Canada conference. Additionally, the organization will continue to hold a special presentation of the Canadian Women in Private Capital Awards, which were added to CVCA’s award program in 2022, honouring the remarkable contributions of women in the field. The past 50 years have been marked by remarkable growth and development in Canada’s VC and PE sectors and the future holds immense potential. Emerging technologies, increasing globalization, and evolving market dynamics present both challenges and opportunities. The Canadian private capital industry continues to evolve, driven by innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit that defines Canada. CVCA remains committed to supporting their members and advocating for policies that foster a thriving investment environment. We extend our thanks to Soul of Canada for their work in capturing the essence of CVCA’s history. Their dedication to making CVCA and the Canadian private capital story accessible and engaging has allowed us to share our journey with you and a broader audience, underscoring the critical role of venture capital and private equity in Canada’s economic growth.
